What will NOT work
Time and time again, addicts try very hard to conceal, control, limit, quit
or simply change one addictive substance for another. The problem is not
within the drugs or alcohol themselves, however. Many of you reading
this now have drunk a beer or have taken a prescription of pain killers for an
injury. Why do you not find yourself addicted? Commonly accepted
by the addictive diseases treatment community is the notion that certain
individuals have a predisposition or a genetic factor which allowed the
disease of addiction to grow roots within the individual. Moving from
one location to another won't work (wherever you go, there you are), changing
one drug for another won't work, trying to control the activities of an addict
by limiting their access to the phone, a car or certain people surely might
temporarily have a positive semblance. In due time, however, the illness
will rear its ugly head, and those around the addict will again be left in
dismay and disgust.
So how do I know if I am an addict or an alcoholic?
This is a very good question, because it presuposes that YOU are the only
one who can make this determination. Many may label you as such, but
until you, yourself decide you are in fact an addict or an alcoholic,
diagnoses and labels simply have no bearing or consequence on your own life.
Most professionals agree that you are most likely an addict if you have tried
repeatedly to stop doing a particular drug or stop drinking. This might
be due to inability to remain financially stable from lack of money.
Whether you're spending money on drugs, or you're not showing up for work,
your financial circumstances have become ruled by drugs or alcohol.
If your tollerance has increased to that far greater than when you first
began using the substance, you could be addicted. Sometimes, people
addicted to pain killers report feelings of increased energy and ability,
when in reality these narcotics (derived from the latin root: narco, or to
sleep) make the non addict tired and groggy.
At Christian Love we believe that addiction to drugs and or alcohol is a
spiritual deficiency, and thus can only be alleviated or even cured by a
spiritual fix. Pharmacy, in its latin root comes from the word,
"Sorcery." It truly is an evil spell on is under when addicted to
pharmacuticals. We do not have an opinion on what should be done
legally or medically if anything at all to stop this problem, but we do have
twenty three years of experience helping addicts of this sort, as well as
those addicted to meth or methamphetamines, crank, crack, cocaine, Xanax,
Methadone, alcohol and many other drugs. (Alcohol IS a drug, by the way).
